Our early adult years (18-35) can be a lot more difficult than many acknowledge. We face many difficulties in our journey to middle age and maturity. Breaking the trend of being poorly Stereotyped.

It’s become a cultural meme to call millennials whiny, spoiled, self centered, etc. But in all reality millennials are more willing to introspect and seek therapy when they most need it. Where older generations sidelined the benefits of therapy (and passed their particular issues to the next generation) millennials are willing to break the cycle. At times they have even been called the Therapy Generation

In fact Millenials, the Y-Generation is the most open-minded, ecologically aware and philanthropic of the past. Seeing this progress gives us at Acuity some extra hope for the future.

Why Are So Many Millenials Struggling Right Now? 

Well for one thing, it’s difficult to be fulfilled in such an economic situation. 
While there is much you can do personally, let’s be honest that not everything can be solely your fault. Those who have graduated in this environment are facing struggles that are unparallelled. “The unemployment rate among millennials was around 8% before the pandemic hit, and now 35% of millennials have lost their job, making them the hardest hit by the pandemic.

Even those that have jobs are participating in a disjointed “gig economy” more than ever before. In such positions, career instability is the norm. This is likely to continue as self-employment in the United States could triple to 42 million workers by 2020, and 42 percent of those people are likely to be millennials.” [WSJ

On top of that, even those that are employed are unsatisfied.

Johann Hari in his book “Lost Connections” points out that careers are almost universally unsatisfying. “Thirteen percent of us like our work most of the time. Sixty-three percent of us are what [we call] “sleepworking”—you don’t like it, you don’t hate it. Twenty-four percent of people hate their work. So you think about that.

New grads currently working or just graduating into this pandemic are going to feel trapped in a position if they are lucky enough to find one. So let’s be clear, if you find yourself un- or under-employed (and struggling with your mental health) understand that you are not the only one facing this right now.

Perhaps it is due to the high workplace stresses we face. As one study points out, “higher levels of workplace stress were associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety as well as lower levels of resiliency, job satisfaction, and healthy lifestyle beliefs.” [Source]

While the job outlook is grim, you can consider some options to change your priorities or at least discuss some coping options with someone who cares.

The Challenges of Social Media

Millenials and young adults are more active on social media than any other generation (so far). This is concerning as people that use social media the most are also more prone to mental health struggles. A study published in Computers in Human Behavior, found that people who report using seven to 11 social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than their peers who use no more than two platforms, even after adjusting for the total time spent on social media overall.

“This association is strong enough that clinicians could consider asking their patients with depression and anxiety about multiple platform use and counseling them that this use may be related to their symptoms,” said lead author Brian A. Primack, MD, PhD, assistant vice chancellor for health and society in Pitt’s Schools of the Health Sciences and the center’s director. Source

We at Acuity take this into consideration as well. We don’t believe that social media will “rot your brain”, but it does change how clients think of themselves. Some clients have found great benefit in limiting how often they use social media or how many apps they use and found a better quality of life. For many, a social media detox of 2 weeks can help put this into perspective. You can also take the time during these two week to reflect on what you really value in your life and put things in perspective.

Relationship Issues

Millennials are the most likely generation to be the children of divorce. As a result many millennials have grown up with uncomfortable attitudes towards commitment and relationships in general. When you consider the unique career concerns of millennials, maintaining a relationship can be difficult. This is one reason why we offer relationship focused therapy for individuals [LINK] or couples therapy for couples issues [LINK].

Some relationship issues that we address with therapy include:

  • Relationship anxieties and planning – Many young adults find that an uncertain future constantly undermines their relationships. 
  • Communication Issues – Relationships require a level of communication that few are naturally good at. After all, it is never taught to us by parents, school, friends…[LINK]

  • Jealousy and Trust Issues – Some people find out as they have serious relationships in adulthood that they have deep trust issues that they can’t overcome on their own.
  • Boundaries in a relationship – Many people suffer from maintaining appropriate boundaries with their partner. Learning to set and stick with boundaries that matter to you is important for any relationship, especially romantic ones. 
  • Sexual dysfunction– After growing up with pervasive internet porn, many couples expect unrealistic things from their relationships. Some develop porn addiction and some develop sexual dysfunction.

Our Approach 

Acuity uses a client-centered approach that lets you guide therapy. We simply help you in your mental processes and push when necessary. Our approach is a little different, so here is what to expect:

1st Session:

This first meeting is an introduction for both you and your counselor. Your therapist will explain the therapy process and go over the specifics of informed consent. From there, your therapist will gather additional information about your history, current circumstances, as well as struggles and personal strengths, which will help them to define a treatment plan that aligns with your goals.

The goals that you set early on, give us a measure to grade ourselves. We take outcomes seriously enough that we use follow-up surveys to grade ourselves and find better ways to help you. What works for one person may not work for another, so these measures keep us accountable to you throughout our time together.

This is also the chance for you to learn more about your therapist. We encourage you to ask questions and get to know them; the relationship you build with your therapist will be the most important part of your work together. 

2nd Session and Following Sessions:

In your weekly sessions, you and your therapist will use evidenced based therapies to help you address your main symptoms. If we find that you have symptoms and goals that are best served with a certain method we will not hesitate to present that option to you.

Our goal is to get you back to living comfortably as quickly as possible.

Closing Sessions:

Our goal is for you to find relief for your concerns and be ready to “graduate” from therapy. In the last few sessions with your therapist, you will review your initial goals, the progress you have made, and solidify new skills for managing anxiety to practice on your own.

At your last meeting together, you’ll have the time for the meaningful goodbye with your therapist. You can always feel free to come back for a yearly follow-up.

How long does Therapy take?

Counseling works best within the framework of a safe and trusted therapeutic alliance. Since it takes time to build this relationship with your therapist, we recommend committing to weekly sessions for at least 8 weeks. Research shows that consistency adds to the positive outcomes of therapy. Once you reach your 8-week goal, you and your therapist can discuss a frequency of sessions that will support your continued success.

I’ve never done therapy before...What can I expect in my sessions?

The unknown of anything new can make it scary. Especially if you’ve never been to counseling before. Let us show you the “roadmap” so you know what to expect:

In your weekly sessions, you and your therapist will use evidenced based therapies such as CBT, Mindfulness or ACT, to help you address your symptoms of worry, stress and anxiety. For anxiety rooted in trauma, or related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), your therapist may recommend treatment with EMDR.

Our goal is for you to find relief from your anxiety and be ready to “graduate” from therapy. In the last few sessions with your therapist, you will review your initial goals, the progress you have made, and solidify your new skills for managing anxiety in your life. At your last meeting together, you’ll have the time for the meaningful goodbye with your therapist.

Why don’t you only use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

While we use CBT as an aspect of our therapeutic approaches, we know that every individual is different. No one responds to any method perfectly, so by employing many techniques we are able to provide the most personalized support. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is talked about in relation to mental health so often because it has a large body of research behind it and is easy to replicate across all cases. This is why you may hear it called “evidence based,” which it certainly is. However, we use other evidence based therapies in conjunction with CBT in our therapies.

How can I evaluate whether therapy is working?

Acuity is unique because we use research backed questionnaires to assess your mood, goals and progress. From time to time we may share with you your progress on these reports, “you report being angry 30% less days than when you started therapy,” and then ask what your goals for the future may be. We have found that by having clients set their own goals and following up regularly we can achieve better results.

If I go to Acuity for help, does it mean there is something wrong with me?

No. We try to break this stigma constantly.

Many people come to Acuity just to gain a better perspective of themselves and work on some issues that they are having in their daily life. There aren’t many places for people to vent and seek honest help, so we provide that space for people as well as psychologically informed advice to better cope with life’s persistent problems. Even if you have a mental health diagnosis there is nothing wrong with you. We all experience and react to the world in different ways, it’s hard to argue that there is anything wrong with that.

Is medication used in conjunction with your therapy?

Some conditions for some people are best treated with the help of medication. If we find it necessary after our initial assessments, we will discuss types of medication, your comfort with it, and the pros and cons of medication with you. If you so choose, we can refer you to the appropriate psychopharmacologist in the area. If you are already on medication, we will coordinate treatment with your primary provider.
