To provide them with opportunities you didn’t have and a loving family to support them along the journey of life. You knew this wouldn’t be easy but you made sure to be active and present to ensure their road to success as an adult.

All of this love for your child makes it utterly painful to watch them struggle. Childhood these days is more challenging than you could have imagined with the influence of technology and social media on their self-esteem, the pressure to excel in all areas of life in order to be accepted into the dream university. Worst of all, the stress and worry created by school shootings; a terror that couldn’t even exist in your worst nightmare is a part of their daily reality.

Sometimes, despite all your best efforts to guide your child, they decide to go their own way. They might behave in ways that go against everything you’ve taught them or make choices such as hanging out with the wrong friend group or even experimenting with drugs and alcohol. When this happens you feel hopeless or liked you’ve failed as a parent.

Just because your child is struggling now, doesn’t mean you can’t help them find their way. Children encounter obstacles in life just as adults do, but often lack the life experience and skills necessary to overcome these hurdles effectively. Counseling offers a unique opportunity for children to connect with another adult (their therapist) in a relationships where they are fully accepted, with no potential for judgement or punishment.

Children and Teens have the opportunity to learn and practice new skills for managing the obstacles in their lives. Therapy also teaches your child to better communicate their thoughts and emotions in a more helpful way. The counselor/child relationship can serve as a building block for improving your own relationship with your child giving you both a resource for navigating the challenges of growing up.
