Acuity Counseling Therapist Bio

Abby Kulkin, MA, CDP, LMFTA

Individual, Adolescent and Family Therapist

Abby enjoys working with individual adults and those seeking assistance with relationships (both couples and families). Life’s challenges can manifest in many ways such as relationship distress, anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. Abby is here to help you build on your inherent strengths to find more effective ways to cope with what life throws your way.

Working with Individuals
Knowledge is power. But sometimes life moves so quickly that you can lose track of what you know even about yourself. This lack of connection to yourself can lead to feeling lost, empty and alone. By increasing your self-awareness and reconnecting you to your core values, you can rediscover your inner strengths, weaknesses, hopes, fears and so much more. Embracing the balance of both the “good” and “bad” will allow you to feel more whole and leverage what you thought were weakness’ to your advantage.

Relationship Guidance
We are relational beings and appropriately feel distressed when an important relationship in our life is out of balance. Whether it’s the relationship with yourself, with a friend, family member or even your significant other, Abby will help guide you through building stronger, more meaningful connections. Abby believes in providing tools to work through relational and communication problems to build on the strengths that already exist in the relationship.

Supporting Substance Use Recovery
Do you find yourself drinking more than you used to help relieve the days’ stress? Are you watching someone you care about struggle with substance abuse are feel unable to help? Maybe you’re just fine with your habits but someone close to you is pushing you to get help. Whatever stage you are at, Abby wants to support you in the journey. If you have a loved one struggling with substance abuse, you need expert guidance on how to best love them without enabling an addiction.

As a member of the recovery community herself, Abby brings both personal/professional experience and a non-judgmental stance to helping you and your family.

How I Can Help
With over 7 years of combined substance abuse and relationship therapy experience, Abby can help you reach your goals in all areas of life. Abby’s work is informed by a blend of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and will help you identify faulty patterns of thinking and behaving that are negatively impacting your life. By re-aligning your thoughts and actions with your core values you can decrease feelings of anxiety and depression as well as reduce the need for substances to cope with intense emotions.
